Kauai

Today we took a boat trip up the Wailua River to the Opaekaa Falls and the Fern Grotto. The island is so lush that we were not surprised to learn that this island receives an average of 400 inches (980 centimetres) per year and has had up to half as much again in some years. It is only three per cent inhabited and 70 per cent is inaccessible! The scenery is beautiful as you can see from the photos.

Photos:

1. The Opaekaa Falls.

2. The Fern Grotto.

3. The cave inside the Grotto. Note the hanging ferns which are called Boston Sword Ferns.

4. Us at the Grotto.

5. Rushing creek feeding into the river.
